Women in Construction honors students

National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) recently honored students who participated in two contests the group sponsored.

Students from Wood Ranch Elementary School in Simi Valley were presented with plaques and monetary awards for their Lego block creations. High school students from Moorpark and Thousand Oaks were also recognized with plaques and monetary awards for their design of a home for teens called "Teenbridge."

Each first-place winner had his or her entry submitted to the regional contest level.

The CAD/Drafting Contest winners were: Paul Hedgcock of Thousand Oaks High School, first place (CAD); Demetri Golpashin of Moorpark High School, first place (drafting); and Neal Havle of Moorpark High School, second place (drafting).

The Block Kids Contest winners, all from Wood Ranch Elementary School, were: Brody McFarland (first place), Bobby Sojka (second place), Morgan Potucek (third place).

Local companies were also honored at this "Industry Appreciation Night" at Sunset Hills Country Club in Thousand Oaks for their year-long support of NAWIC’s community programs implemented by the Simi/Conejo Chapter.

The event also featured a silent auction, raffle drawings and Jodi Bagwell of Bagwell Construction providing behind-the-scenes details of her work on the "Extreme Makeover" program. Auction and raffle proceeds will be used for the youth scholarship fund.
