Suspect arrested for 2004 shooting

An gang-related arrest has been made in a seven-month-old Simi Valley attempted murder case. Alexander Lerma, 22, of Moorpark was arrested by Simi Valley police at 3 p.m. June 16 for the attempted murder of a 16-year-old male juvenile and for involvement in criminal street-gang activities.

At 1:32 a.m. Nov. 23, 2004 police responded to 911 calls reporting gunshots in an alley behind an apartment building in the 900 block of Ashland Avenue in Simi Valley. The victim had been shot in his left leg and left forearm.

Law enforcement officers never abandoned their investigation, officials said.

“I was impressed with the tenacity of the Special Problems Section in bringing this difficult case to a successful conclusion,” said Police Chief Mark Layhew. “The city council and the police department take a zero-tolerance approach to criminal activity, particularly when it’s gang-related,” he said.
