Pirates invade Ventura for days of fun

Gather yer crew and head to Ventura “Aarghbor” Village for some swashbuckling fun at the 12th annual Pirate Days Festival from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sat. and Sun., June 3 and 4 at 1583 Spinnaker Drive off Harbor Boulevard.

In celebration of the new “Pirates of the Caribbean” film, this year’s event will have a theme of “Dead Men DO Tell Tales.”

New elements will include ice sculpting by Ventura Harbor Village’s French chef Jean Luc, as well as a chalk-painting artist, professional pirate shows and a kids’ marionette show titled “Princess and the Pirates.”

The festival will also feature: lunch with pirates at the Greek Mediterranean Grill at 11:45 a.m. both days; the Reece Ryan Kids’ On-Land Pirate Ship; Capt. Hook and Capt. Jack Sparrow lookalikes; as well as belly dancing by Kali, photos with a mermaid, exotic birds, inflatable jumping rides and strolling pirate musicians.

Along with a Pirate Marketplace, guests can visit a Port Royal Privateers’historical encampment. Vendors will offer face painting, henna body art, woodcrafts, pirate attire, jewelry, metal gifts and nautical-themed loot.

Costume contests will take place both days at the following times: for kids from birth to age 7 at 1:45 p.m.; tweens ages 8 to 15 at 2:45 p.m.; and adults 16 and up at 3:45 p.m. Prizes will include tickets to San Diego Zoo and Legoland for the kids, to Magic Mountain for tweens and Disneyland for the adults.

A pet costume contest will take place Saturday only.

Children can also take part in the Kids Treasure Hunt for $3 and free craft activities.

Village restaurants will offer cuisine including roasted turkey legs and rum drink specials.

The Pirates Charles strolling pirate band and Pirates for Hire will provide daily shows.

Admission, parking and shuttle buses are free. Pirate Days’ shuttle parking will be available from noon to 5 p.m. both days at Schooner Drive and Harbor Boulevard.
